Queer- and trans-affirming dietitian in Kilsyth and online
I'm Jack, an Accredited Practising Dietitian. I'm gay, and I'm a proud trans ally. I work with LGBTQIA+ people of all ages, in Kilsyth and by telehealth across Australia. You can come to my sessions as yourself.
Why affirming care matters
Queer people face discrimination and prejudice across their lives. That ongoing stress, called minority stress, affects both mental and physical health [1]. Trans and gender-diverse people face extra layers of this stress [2].
Many of us also carry the weight of hiding who we are, now or when we were growing up. Keeping part of yourself hidden takes real effort and adds to that stress [3]. And right now, trans people in particular see their lives and identities debated in public, again and again.
I know some of this from my own life as a gay man. I want my sessions to be one place where you don't have to explain or defend who you are.
How I make my care affirming
Your name and pronouns. I use the name and pronouns you tell me, every time.
Inclusive forms. My forms ask about gender and pronouns in an open way, with room to write your own answer.
Trans- and hormone-inclusive nutrition. Gender-affirming hormones can affect things like body composition and some blood test results. I take this into account in your nutrition care [4].
I keep learning. I'm always working to improve how I support queer and trans people.
Your feedback matters. If I get something wrong, please tell me. I'll listen, thank you, and do better.
What a session looks like
The first appointment is 60 minutes. We talk about what's going well, what feels hard and what you'd like from our time together. You choose how much you share, including about your gender and sexuality.
Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes. I see people in person in Kilsyth on Saturdays and Sundays, and by telehealth from Wednesday to Sunday.
The first appointment costs $180 and follow-ups cost $110.
Who I see
I see queer and trans people of all ages, including trans and gender-diverse children and teens. People book with me for the same reasons anyone else does, such as general health, eating well on a budget, or a better relationship with food.
Many queer and trans people are also neurodivergent. Autism is more common in trans and gender-diverse people, and so are ADHD and other diagnoses [5]. So you might see me for any of the reasons on my neurodivergence page too.
If you're trans and using gender-affirming hormones, your body can go through big changes. Nutrition support alongside hormone therapy can help you feel your best through those changes.
